The legend of St. George and the Dragon describes a saint taming and slaying a dragon that demanded human sacrifices, the next of which was to be a princess.
This legend was subjugated by the church in the 14th century and Westernised to show St. George as a chivalrous crusader knight with the red and white of St. Georges cross as his heraldery, however, this brooch is rare as it shows St. George as a Thracian horseman which makes this a depiction of the original legend, set in 11th century Cappodecia (modern day Turkey).
